Pop Videos

Here are a few music videos, from the pop genre, that I think you may find useful to research.

This Little Mix video is an excellent example of a performance based video with a concept running through it. Moreover, it has a clear linear narrative which moves through Todorov's 3 stages - equilibrium, dis-equilibrium and new equilibrium.

There is a variety of locations and something that you could consider in your work - utilising your college locations? Costume is carefully considered and there are a significant amount of changes.

Whilst, realistically, to pull off a video like this in terms of the amount of actors and standard of performance it is an excellent video to analyse in terms of it's narrative structure, using the forms and conventions of the pop genre and playing with issues of representation.

I really like the simplicity of this video. The performance is carefully choreographed. Location is studio based with attention to lighting. There are a variety of camera distances and plenty of close-ups on the artist. Costume changes occur regularly and the 'fun' factor (a theme of the pop genre has been used). I think this is a video that you could take a lot of inspiration from in terms of structure, performance and location. To create a video like this you would need over 20 takes of the video playing around with lighting.

Another video where you could replicate some of the shots using the coloured backgrounds and the dance studio. Again, there are a variety of close-ups, carefully choreographed dance routines and a number of costume changes. I particularly like the angled shots and the use of lighting.

This Taylor Swift video utilises forms and conventions of the pop genre. It evidences a variety of close ups and contains a dance routine. Again, locations are well used and some of these are at your disposal - studio based.
